Technology Performance and Composition
Technology Performance
Our Music Technology Program was one of the first programs accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) to offer Applied Technology Performance as an option for your primary instrument studies. In other words, you can study performing on laptop, analog synths, digital synths, turntable, MIDI controllers, and other technology-based instruments as your primary musical instrument for the degree: the same way a student could study woodwinds, brass, percussion, voice, and piano.
All music majors pursuing a Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Music Education degree must pass an audition on their primary instrument/voice to be admitted to the degree. Students pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree must audition for placement in lessons but may begin the degree program before passing the audition. As part of the degree program, you will take lessons on your primary instrument/voice. Music technology majors may declare Technology as their instrument of choice for lessons, or choose a traditional instrument or voice. For more information on audition requirements for any instrument/voice, including applied technology, please see: Applications, Scholarships, and Auditions.
New Technologies Ensemble
As a Music Technology major, you can perform in a variety of UCM Department of Music ensembles, appropriate to your primary instrument. Those students whose primary instruments are technology-based will perform in UCM's New Technologies Ensemble.
The New Technologies Ensemble is a group where you perform with technology-based instruments. This ensemble is open via audition to any UCM student who performs on laptop, synthesizers, turntables, or other technology-based instruments. The group performs new compositions, arrangements of traditional works, and pieces for indeterminate instrumentation. In addition, the group is also divided into small ensembles that develop their own works from pop to hip-hop, ambient, experimental, and more.
Composition and Arranging
We also offer coursework and private lessons in music composition (from acoustic to electronic) from our highly experienced composition faculty. Courses in jazz and popular music arranging and harmony offer you the ability to polish your skills.
